Estate administration is done after a person has died and his or her Executor is managing, controlling, and distributing the deceased person’s estate. Executors have a number of responsibilities including:
- arranging the funeral
- locating and identifying assets and obtaining their values as of the date of death
- identifying and obtaining the amounts of any debts and paying those debts
- opening an estate bank account
- taking control of assets (e.g. possession of keys to the home)
- applying for a Certificate of Appointment of Estate Trustee with/without a Will
- payment of any outstanding income taxes, accounting fees, executor’s compensation
- distribution of the estate assets in accordance with the provisions of the Last Will and Testament or according to the law if the deceased died without a Will
- to act fairly, with integrity and in the best interests of Estate
